Today sound and image records account for a large portion of the world’s memory and are found in diverse social memory institutions. As documents of intangible heritage and contemporary culture, they are of immense value. Yet archives, museums, libraries and other cultural institutions around the world are struggling to conserve their sound and image collections in both analogue and digital formats. Moreover, conservation of sound and image materials is complex and requires specialized guidance, skills and infrastructure.

The International Council on Archives Section on University and Research Institution Archives (ICA-SUV) will hold its annual conference 13-16 July 2015 at the University of North Carolina’s Louis Round Wilson Special Collections Library in Chapel Hill, N.C., USA. The Scientific Committee for the 2015 ICA-SUV Conference invites proposals for papers addressing the preservation, discovery, rights, and knowledge, skills, and capacity challenges surrounding audiovisual archives. 2014 Winners: ARSC Awards for Excellence

ARSC is pleased to recognize outstanding published research in the field of recorded sound with our annual Awards for Excellence. The Association for Recorded Sound Collections is pleased to announce the winners of the 2014 ARSC Awards for Excellence in Historical Recorded Sound Research. Begun in 1991, the awards are presented to authors and publishers of books, articles, liner notes, and monographs, to recognize outstanding published research in the field of recorded sound.
