IASA maintains operational relations with UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. UNESCO’s mission is "to contribute to the building of a culture of peace, the eradication of poverty, sustainable development and intercultural dialogue through education, the sciences, culture, communication and information".

UNESCO designated the date of 27 October as the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage.

Memory of the World Register

The Memory of the World Register lists documentary heritage including audiovisual collections that have been recommended by the International Advisory Committee, and endorsed by the Director-General of UNESCO, as corresponding to the selection criteria regarding world significance and outstanding universal value.
