Intellectual property: new EU rules for orphan works
on 4 October 2012, the European Council adopted a directive establishing a legal framework aimed at improving access to and digitisation of orphan works across the EU. Orphan works are works (such as books, newspapers, magazines, audio recordings, films, etc.) that are protected by copyright but whose owners cannot be identified or found.

The EU has launched a new, trilingual website called Med-Mem (www.medmem.eu) aimed at promoting Euro-Mediterranean heritage through audiovisual archives from the region's public televisions.
With some 4,000 audiovisual documents available to the public free of charge, Med-Mem - 68% co-funded by the European Union as part of the Euromed Heritage IV programme - is the largest online video archive library devoted to the historic, cultural and tourism heritage of the Mediterranean.
