Past IASA President Ulf Scharlau (1943 - 2021)

Ulf Scharlau, a former President of IASA, has died. We send our condolences to his family and loved ones. And it is with sincere gratitude that, as we share the sad news of his passing, we also acknowledge his service to IASA. Ulf served on its Executive Board as Treasurer from 1978-1984, as President from 1984-1987 and as Past President from 1987-1990.

Ulf was the first member of IASA’s Executive Board from Germany. He tried to convince colleagues in Germany and particularly in the Public Radio and Television company ARD to become members of IASA. In 1990 he was a founding member of the German-Swiss German Branch, an idea he first presented to the Executive Board in 1979.

As director of the archives of the former Süddeutscher Rundfunk that became, after a reorganisation, the Südwestrundfunk, he was appreciated as an open-minded leader accessible to everybody among his staff. He taught at the Media University in Stuttgart where he was appointed an Honorary Professor in 1998.
