The 2012 ASRA Conference, proudly presented in association with the University of Technology’s (UTS) Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at their Harris St campus, is almost upon us, so please put the dates 19-21 September in your diary.

The focus of this year’s conference is Radio with a full spectrum of speakers and live audio presentations confirmed. We are delighted that veteran broadcaster Tim Bowden has agreed to give the Keynote Address and to have Gavin Jones, Founder and Managing Director of Deadly Vibe, present the Alice Moyle Lecture, in which he will look back at 20 years of Deadly Sounds.

Live audio performances and ‘listening’ sessions are a special part of this year’s program. These include a panel discussion celebrating the legacy of influential producer Tony Barrell and Multimodal Radiophonic Performance by Roger Mills which will be broadcast on 2SER.

2012 is the 90th anniversary of commercial broadcasting in Australia and the 80th anniversary of the ABC. To celebrate these milestones the Conference includes sessions that focus on The Dawn of Radio, Radio’s Golden Age, Making & Collecting Radio and Listening.The conference will conclude with a panel chaired by Steve Ahearn that will look at the future of the medium : Who Will Listen to the Radio ?

Delegates to the Conference are also urged to attend the Technical Day on September 19 that will include tours of ABC Archives and Master Control plus a presentation of the Powerhouse Museum’s collection of vintage radios. The cost of attending the entire three-day conference is just $90 for ASRA members or $110 for non-members. Please book early as attendance is strictly limited, and don’t forget the ASRA dinner on Thursday the 20th, which will be at the Australian Youth Hotel (63 Bay St GLEBE)
