ARA Film, Sound & Photography Section - AGM

Date:
26 Sep 2011
Location:
Yorkshire, UK

The Film, Sound & Photography Section of the Archives and Records Association is dedicated to promoting and raising awareness of audio-visual collections. We also organise training events and offer advice and access to specialist information regarding the management of audio-visual material. We are an active group of archivists, conservators and other specialists and we are looking for people to join our committee at the next AGM as existing committee members will be stepping down.

Our next AGM is taking place on Monday 26th September, between 1.30pm-4.00pm, at East Riding of Yorkshire Archives and Local Studies, County Hall, Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire, HU17 9BA. Alongside the annual reports and election of officers there will be a tour of the archive and John Chambers will be on hand to provide the latest news about the Archives & Records Association. Martin Astell will also talk about the How to Speak Essex project at Essex Record Office.

The AGM serves as a forum for attendees to ask questions about the development of the section and its activities and to freely discuss any issues surrounding audio-visual archives. It also represents a great chance for you to meet specialists in the field of audio-visual archives and ask them any burning questions you might have!

Serving as a committee member can be very rewarding. As the current Secretary and in previous roles, I've been involved in organising events for my professional colleagues to help them gain knowledge and expertise in this exciting area of archive and conservation work. Serving on a committee can help those undertaking Registration gain additional credits and make an effective contribution to the profession as a whole. The group has 9 committee members currently, 6 of whom serve specific roles. These roles comprise; Chair, Hon. Secretary, Hon. Treasurer, Training Officer, Publications Officer and Website Officer. Other committee members offer advice, assistance and support where necessary.

David Lee, our Publications Officer, is stepping down from the committee after serving as a member for eighteen years (seven of which were as Chair). David is the committee's expert in film archives and has guided many archivists and other heritage professionals through the complexities of managing audio-visual archives. We're looking for someone to join the committee and succeed David as our resident expert on film archives and for someone to join and fill the role of Publications Officer. This role involves advertising and collating content for the Section's edition of ARC and regularly reviewing the guides, best practice publication and other resources that the Section makes available via ARA's website. It also means responding to enquiries received via the Section's email address.

Attendance at the AGM is free and we invite all section members to come along. Places are limited so if you'd like to come along please email me directly at martin.devereux@postalheritage.org.uk or phone 020 7239 2481.
