National Library of Latvia to open a collection of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty broadcasts for World Radio Day 2018

To mark World Radio Day 2018, a collection of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) Latvian service broadcasts will be formally opened on February 15 at the Audiovisual reading room of the National Library of Latvia (NLL).

The event will be attended by former radio journalists of the service, as well as listeners (it was a dangerous business merely listening to the station during the Cold War). The free event will be hosted by Latvian Radio journalist Aidis Tomsons.  Thanks to collaboration with the Hoover Institution Library and Archives at Stanford University, USA, the NLL received digital files of many RFE/RL Latvian service recordings. Currently the collection consists of 210 recordings dating from the second half of the last century until 2002.

This collection provides only a partial insight into the activities of the RFE/RL Latvian service staff in USA, Munich, Prague and Riga, as well as into the topics and themes that were prepared and transmitted, despite Moscow's efforts to interfere with the transmission.

The RFE/RL Latvian service operation started in 1975 in Munich (Germany). The main task of the editorial staff was "to send Latvians uncensored, objective, true and important information in their own language", paying special attention to culture, maintaining national identity, human rights and democratic processes. In 1995, radio staff continued work in Prague (Czech Republic), while in later years the Riga office was also active. On 31 December 2004, transmission of the broadcasts was stopped, and many editorial offices, including in Latvia, were closed.

Atzīmējot Pasaules radio dienu, 15. februārī plkst. 17.30 Latvijas Nacionālās bibliotēkas (LNB) Audiovizuālajā lasītavā notiks "Radio Brīvā Eiropa"/"Radio Brīvība" (RFE/RL – Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty) raidījumu kolekcijas atvēršana. Pasākumā piedalīsies bijušie radio žurnālisti un klausītāji un to vadīs "Latvijas Radio" žurnālists Aidis Tomsons. Dalība bez maksas.

Pateicoties sadarbībai ar Hoover Institution Library and Archives (Stenforda Universitāte, ASV), LNB saņēma digitalizētus RFE/RL latviešu redakcijas ierakstus. Šobrīd radio raidījumu kolekciju veido 210 vienības kopš pagājušā gadsimta otrās puses līdz 2002. gadam.

Šī kolekcija sniedz tikai nelielu ieskatu RFE/RL latviešu redakcijas darbībā Amerikā, Minhenē, Prāgā un Rīgā, un tematos, kā arī informācijā, kura tika sagatavota un pārraidīta, neskatoties uz Maskavas centieniem traucēt translācijai.

"Radio Brīvā Eiropa"/"Radio Brīvība" darbība sākta 1975. gadā Minhenē (Vācijā). Par redakcijas galveno uzdevumu tika izvirzīts "raidīt latviešiem necenzētu, objektīvu, patiesu un nozīmīgu informāciju viņu pašu valodā", īpašu uzmanību veltot kultūrai, nacionālās identitātes saglabāšanai, cilvēktiesību un demokrātisko procesu īstenošanai. 1995. gadā radio darbība turpinājās Prāgā (Čehija), savukārt vēlākos gados darbojās arī Rīgas redakcija. 2004. gada 31. decembrī raidījumu translācija tika pārtraukta un daudzas redakcijas, tostarp latviešu, darbību beidza.
