Creole Music of the French West Indies: a discography, 1900-1959

Subtitle or Edition:
Annotation:

A well-illustrated and researched 367-page discography of Creole Music recorded in the French West Indies and Paris between 1900 and 1959. The volume was compiled by Alain Boulanger, John Cowley and Marc Monneraye, and features a lengthy historical essay by Cowley (in English and French) entitled "Mascarade, biguine and the bal negre." Given the period covered by this work, the discography includes coarse groove shellac discs, as well as 33- and 45-rpm microgroove recordings. Also included are: a checklist of labels and series for 78- and 45-rpm discs; a checklist of microgroove and digital releases identified in the text; a checklist of recorded folktales obtained by Elsie Clews Parsons in Martinique, Guadeloupe and ancillary islands between 1924 and 1927; name and title indexes; and a bibliography of books, newspapers and periodicals.
