Intellectual property: new EU rules for orphan works
on 4 October 2012, the European Council adopted a directive establishing a legal framework aimed at improving access to and digitisation of orphan works across the EU. Orphan works are works (such as books, newspapers, magazines, audio recordings, films, etc.) that are protected by copyright but whose owners cannot be identified or found.
Tutorial: Intellectual Property rights and access

Using documents from the World Intellectual Property Organization plus the categories of owners and users described in IASA's Special Publication #6, "Ethical Principles for Sound and Audiovisual Archives," this tutorial will examine definitions of terms as well as differences that may exist between legal and ethical understandings of intellectual property rights, and the resulting implications for audiovisual archives.
The Education and Training Committee of ARSC, the Association for Recorded Sound Collections, is pleased to announce that for the first time, ARSC is offering a live webcast of its pre-conference workshop for those who are unable to attend in person in Rochester, NY.
The workshop and live webcast will run from 9:00 am - 5:00 PM EDT (13:00 - 22:00 UTC), with breaks. An archived version will also be made available to all registrants for a limited time.

The IASA Executive Board has granted an extension for the submissions of proposals for presentations, posters and panel discussions for the 43rd IASA Annual Conference, to be held in New Delhi, India, 7-11 October 2012.
The closing date for submissions has been extended to February 28, 2012
