Head of Audio and Moving Image Preservation, NYPL

This past year The New York Public Library completed a year-long Mellon-funded comprehensive assessment of its audio and moving image (AMI) collections, which are among the largest and most important in the world. As part of a growing resource commitment to address the AMI challenges identified in that assessment (information may found at www.nypl.org/preservation), NYPL has created a new position for Head of Audio and Moving Image Preservation. The new Head will lead the transformation of a well-established operation into an ever-increasing high-production program designed to meet the strategic objectives of the Library.

NYPL's robust and growing AMI preservation program consists of in-house audio labs, in-house moving image labs, and an outsourcing component. The unit’s preservation activities include: appraisal, format identification, condition review, cleaning, treatment, re-housing, preservation reformatting, documentation and quality control. The unit also participates in other Library strategic initiatives that include areas such as collection care, outreach, education, and exhibitions.
