Introduction

This paper provides a summary of the progress made to date in our understanding of the stability of information carriers. It is not comprehensive but provides “snapshots” of key issues. Accordingly it addresses problems such as how information carriers break down, how to identify breakdown, how breakdown is influenced by archival storage and how we can extend the lifetime of carriers.
